A fire in forestry will be blocked near Picton Airport



A fire has broken into a pine forest block near Picton Airport.

The fire is in a hedgerow range of pine planting and is about 100 meters with 30 meters in size.

There are three helicopters and fire teams from Picton, Blenheim and Rarangi.

Fire officer at Picton's Voluntary Fire Brigade Wayne Wytenburg said the fire was near the Speeds Road at Koromiko, between Blenheim and Picton.

A fire and emergency speaker (FENZ) said that this level was not affected at this stage.

Picton's resident, Alec Grigor, said he had heard a 2-sirens and saw a smoke coming over the rise and thought he could be on his friend's building.

A fire has gone down behind Picton Airport.

"I went on quickly with my brother and saw that he was in the hills, above his airports."

There was a lot of smoke, Gregor said.

"The fire was smoking first and then the smoke was raised … it was a red smoke to tell you that she was fired well."

Grigor was watching a helicopter with a monsoon bucket; letting water on the device, he said.

FENZ wants people to stay away from the area.
