Notre Dame crushes Syracuse, strengthens College Football Playoff resume NCAA Football

With its College Football Playoff hopes hanging in the balance, No.3 Notre Dame (11-0) put forth one of its most dominant efforts of the season, a 36-3 shellacking of No. 12 Syracuse (8-3) at Yankee Stadium.

The Fighting Irish defense did not let Syracuse – which entered the game ranked fourth in the NCAA in points per game (44.4) – do anything on the offensive side of the ball. Of course, the loss of senior quarterback Eric Dungey in the first quarter did not do the Orange any favors. Dungey and backup Tommy DeVito combined to go 15 of 35 for 115 yards and three interceptions.

Syracuse had only 234 total yards – 127 of which came on its last two drives in garbage time – and went the entire third quarter without getting a first down.

Notre Dame alleviated any concerns about how it would fare against the high-scoring Orange offense, and the group looks like one that could go toe-to-toe against any offense in the country.

Ian Book supplemented his defense's efforts with a great quarterback performance, carving up the Orange up for 292 yards through the air. He only turned the ball over once.

The Irish will try to close out an undefeated regular season against USC next week, while Syracuse will play No. 20 Boston College for the chance to get a bid in a better bowl game.
