Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology conducted the first flight test aircraft model-monolete, which uses the phenomenon of ion wind, which is called the effect of Biffeld – brown. It is reported N + 1.
During the tests, the aircraft with the help of ion thrust flew about 60 meters at a height of 47 inches from the floor. The launch of the aircraft was carried out by using the catapult.
The phenomenon of ion wind is characterized by the formation of a stream of ionized air between two spaced apart electrodes to which is supplied a high voltage of tens of kilovolts.
Some researchers have proposed advanced design of aircraft that would use the phenomenon of ion wind, but the projects were closed. It is believed that the engines using the effect of Biffeld – brown, can not provide great traction.
In reality, it was made a few experimental aircraft, called lifters or monolete. They represent the light body in the form of a polygon, usually a triangle, which is one electrode in the form of copper wire and the foil tape. Such devices can climb vertically, but completely unmanageable.
